The 2024 Carbon Tax Refund in Canada is a payment enacted to offset the federal carbon tax charged to Canadian citizens. For example, whether you reside in Ontario, Alberta, or Nova Scotia, you will want to know your specific amount and date of payment. This article will break down the amount of the payment, as well as the dates, so that you can be sure to access your payment.
What Is The Carbon Tax Refund
Canada’s carbon tax is a tax charged on the carbon content of fuels, and the amount of tax charged is intended to increase from CA$65 per tonne of CO2 in 2023 to CA$170 by the end of 2030. To assist households who are experiencing higher prices as a result of it, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) provides the Carbon Tax Refund (with the official designation being: Climate Action Incentive Payment). For the 2024 year, New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba residents will receive quarterly tax free payments sorted to support them with the monetary impact of the tax. The refund reflects the type of family you are and where you live, along with an extra amount if you live in a rural or infrequently populated area.
Payment Dates
The federal government switched to quarterly payments for the Climate Action Incentive begining in July 2022. Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia received three payments in the first year, followed by four quarterly payments introducing in July 2023. Please note that the payments are issued on the 15th of April, July, October and January, or the last possible business days if the 15th falls on weekends or holidays. If you opted for Direct deposit, the refund will be deposited automatically into your account.
